What is a Referendum?

It is like an election, but rather than casting a vote for a candidate you will be asked to vote YES or NO as to whether you think the policies in the Neighbourhood Plan should be used by Northumberland County Council to help it decide planning applications in Alnwick and Denwick.

It is the last step in the process we have been working on for over three years. The majority of those voting YES or NO in the referendum will decide its outcome.

If you live in the parishes of Alnwick or Denwick and are on the electoral register you will be able to vote.

Why a Neighbourhood Plan?

The Neighbourhood Plan has been prepared by a local steering group led by Alnwick Town Council. It is the community’s opportunity to influence planning decisions. The Plan has policies which cover housing and housing growth, the economy and employment, town centre and retail, the environment, heritage and culture, and transport. The Plan also promotes the appropriate development of community facilities including leisure and education.

What happens without a Neighbourhood Plan?

If more people vote ‘No’, than ‘Yes, then planning applications will continue to be decided without using the Alnwick & Denwick Neighbourhood Plan.
